Bike Stand

How to choose your bike kick stand

If you're unsure of which kick stand to buy, read on to find out which bike kick stands will fit on which bikes!

Bike kick stands are a very convenient bike accessory. For everyday city biking or during your long-distance bike rides, they allow you to leave your bike in a stable, upright position.

Bike stands can be divided into two main families: side stands and centre stands.

side kickstand

Side kickstands

Side stands are the kind you'll generally find on hybrid and mountain bikes. The side stand is generally fixed near the chainset, but can also be attached to the frame's seat stays or chain stays.

For bikes with a heavy load (bags, child seat, basket, etc.) a side stand is perfect. Just remember to check the maximum load that the stand can take. In the case of a heavily laden bike (particularly with a lot of weight at the back), the ideal position for a side stand is at the back on the opposite side to the derailleur.

centre bikestand

Centre stands

Double-leg centre stands can support a very heavy weight and are incredibly stable. But remember that, if you've got a lot of stuff on your bike, they only remain stable when the load is evenly distributed between the front and back.

In the case of a bike with a child seat, a double-leg central stand can create a lever effect, with the front wheel lifting up and potentially throwing the bike off balance.

You should also bear in mind that your bike's stability will depend on the terrain you're on. On very soft ground, it can be hard to keep your bike upright, no matter what type of stand you're using. Stands with a wide foot are of course more stable.
