The 3-layer system
Let's check out the three fundamental layers for protecting yourself in cold weather!
Before you start packing your luggage, here are some tips for layering in colder weather!
Winter trips may sound a little scary for those living in tropical climates like Singapore, as one might not exactly be sure of what to wear in order to stay warm. But fret not, we are here to help you with that! Introducing the 3-layer system!
A common misconception that many of us have is to purchase thicker jackets when we are going to a cold country! However, the truth is that wearing multiple layers will keep you much warmer than a single thick layer.
Effective layering traps warm air in between, which will act as an insulator. By layering up, you can also easily adjust your warmth level by removing/adding an extra layer. Too many layers and you'll sacrifice precious luggage space, too little and you'll risk being cold!
Remember: You can always remove and adapt to the temperature with the layers you have, but you cannot put on layers you didn't pack.
Let's check out the three fundamental layers for protecting yourself in cold weather!
Start your layering strategy with a Base Layer!
Base layers help retain your body heat, it also has perspiration-wicking properties to ensure you stay dry, comfortable and warm. The first of the 3 layers, think of it as your "second skin" and the layer you will put on first.
To choose your base layer, pick one that fits you snug, of the appropriate material for your planned activities be it casual or sporty.
If you are going to a place that is especially cold, you might want to look out for thermal base layers instead. We have a more detailed guide all about choosing the right base layers. Check it out!
Pro-tip: Try to avoid 100% cotton when it comes to your base layer – this material tends to absorb your sweat which ends up making you feel colder.
Insulation is the name of the game for your middle layer. The second layer serves as insulation between your base layer and the outer shell. This helps to retain the body heat that you naturally radiate thus keeping you cozy.
At Decathlon, there is a wide variety of middle layers to choose from, but we recommend 2 main types: Down Jackets and Fleece Jackets!
Down Jackets
A down jacket is a lightweight yet highly insulating jacket filled with down feathers. Our Down Jackets compacts into its own pocket making it's packing footprint small. An ideal choice for staying warm and comfortable during your winter holiday.
We recommend choosing a Down Jacket if you're going on a more casual winter vacation or if you're prioritizing that precious luggage space!
Fleece Jackets
A fleece jacket is an insulating layer made from synthetic fibers, ideal for more active activities and layering in cold conditions. Though not as easy to pack, Fleece has quick-drying properties compared to a down jacket.
Going for a hike or more sporty winter activities? We recommend a fleece for it's quicker drying properties.
While the first two layers help to create warmth and lock it in, this outer-most layer will protect you from wind and rain!
This is essential because once wind or rain gets into your inner layers, it will be very difficult for you to stay warm.
Consider 2 main things when choosing an outer jacket: Water and Wind-Proofing.
Especially if you are going to a place that is likely to rain or snow. Getting a waterproof outer layer will help prevent rain from seeping into your inner layers. (making you cold again)
Also, It might be 15 degrees outside but strong winds can actually make it feel like zero degrees. If you are going to a windy area, make sure you get an outer jacket that is windproof so that you're ready for anything the weather can throw at you.
