5 Tips For First-Timers Running On A Treadmill

Looking to start running at home? Here are 5 easy tips to follow for anyone who wants to start running on a treadmill. Tread along to find out more!

1. Start Slowly and Safely

Adaptation is important. When running on a treadmill, start slow. Go with a steady pace, and let your feet and body be in tune with the machine. Once you have warmed up, you can increase the speed, and thereafter run at your desired pace.

Adjust The Incline

2. Adjust the Incline

Running on a treadmill is easier than running outdoors as you're running on a flat surface with no wind resistance to deter you. In order to amp up the challenge, increase the incline on your treadmill to mimick conditions similar to your runs outside.

3. Relax Your Posture

Posture is a key element whether you're running indoors or outdoors. Maintain the same posture as you would when you run outside.

Before you start running on your treadmill, remember to:

1. Stand straight

2. Keep your eyes focused–  look ahead and don't get distracted by your surroundings. Try not to look at the display console of your treadmill.

3. Keep to the centre of the treadmill. If you are positioned too front, your stride could be limited. And if you are too far back, you may trip if your stride goes beyond the treadmill.

4. Relax – enjoy the run!

Take Notice Of Your Stride

4. Take Notice of Your Stride

Running on the treadmill will definitely result in a different stride as compared to running outdoors. Therefore, instead of trying to attain the same stride, let the treadmill belt control it for you! This way, your pace is maintained too. Consequently, you will realise that your strides are shorter as compared to running outdoors. It is perfectly normal!

5. Hydrate!

Last but not least, remember to drink plenty of water before you start your runs! Hydration is key in enjoying a run. It also helps you to concentrate and prevent cramps. We sure need to replenish the water we've lost, especially in this humid Singaporean weather where we tend to perspire a lot more!
